And you thought texting was for getting through boring classes...

London has recently made available "AirTEXT," a free service that will send locals an email, SMS, or voicemail if the air quality is expected to be poor in his or her part of London. This should help people who suffer from diseases like asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease or angina and live or work in London. Eighty percent of the users of the beta testing said it helped them manage their chronic illness better. Read this press statement here, then comment on:

This article hits home for me because I suffered from asthma throughout my childhood and occasionally as an adult. My asthma doesn't bother me so much nowadays, but I sometimes get asthma when I travel to a new place with a more-than-usual amount of dust or other pollution in the air. For situations like these, I am often without my inhaler because I do not always carry it with me. This article reveals a possible solution for people like me who could use "AirTEXT" to either prepare themselves by bringing their medication or simply avoiding these polluted areas. In the long run, AirTEXT’s warning system might save hundreds and thousands of dollars that are spent in the emergency rooms for sudden asthma attacks and/or other respiratory problems. Certainly, parents who can avoid the scare of rushing their child to the hospital could greatly appreciate AirTEXT’s potential.

For those of you unfamiliar with the mechanism of asthma, here's an animation that briefly explains how it works.

This article was very useful and interesting about how "Airtext" is now available to people who have suffer from diseases like asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease or angina and live or work in London. I have asthma currently in my life and by inhaling medication every so often, your body is too weak to do anything. So by providing this "Airtext," it will be helpful towards people to know the air quality is expected to be poor in his or her part of London. By showing people the air quality in London, people can avoid the area so their asthma for example won't get severely worse.

I found a website for those who don't really know what asthma is.

This article was interesting and helpful especially to those who suffer from asthma and other heart-related diseases. It's incredible how a service like AirTEXT can alert the conditions of the air pollution through texts. This provides the customers with information that can almost save their lives. By sending messages of how the air condition is, this could minimize any risks of people exposing themselves to harmful effects such as wheezing, chest pains, etc. This is certainly a brilliant way to help reduce those attacks on asthma patients.

The idea of the “AirTEXT” is a great idea because it not only strives to improve the air quality, but it also informs and benefits the public, especially the asthma patients, about the days when the air is highly polluted. With this SMS technology, people with asthma have a greater chance of improving their health because by looking into their cell phones or emails, they will know which days to go outside or not. By using “AirTEXT,” asthma patients will not be surprised at how bad or good the weather will be, instead, they will be more prepared, thus increasing their health every day. I’m interested in keeping our world clean and because the PROMOTE program is trying to improve the amount of pollution in the atmosphere and the lives of asthma patients, I am leaning towards the success of this program.

I think airtext is a great idea, because it can give people a warning to areas with bad pollution so they can possibly avoid them. It is especially good for people who have asthma or other problems that can worsen do to bad air quality. Air pollution has many bad effects on people including irritate the eyes, throat and lungs, burning eyes, cough and chest tightness. Different people can react very differently to air pollution. Some people may notice chest tightness or cough, while others may not notice any effects.People with heart disease, such as angina (chest pain), or with lung disease, such as asthma or emphysema, may be very sensitive to air pollution exposure, and may notice symptoms when others do not.
I thnik airtext will help to warn people, but it is obviously not a solution to the problem. I believe a lot more needs to be done to truly fix or start to decrease pollution.
