More uses for Viagra

Maybe we should just start a list of things Viagra is good for, besides the obvious? Now it might help with overcoming jet-lag. Check it out.

This article simply demonstrates the best thing about science, it's unpredictable. Viagra was originally created to treat patients with high blood pressure. Viagra would dialate the blood vessels in the patient in order to lower their blood pressure. Of course they soon discovered that Viagra came with some unexpected side-effects. It is the same with Rogaine. Rogaine was created to treat low blood pressure and they discovered that the patients who took rogaine had hair grow on their chests. As we discussed in lecture with Botox, scientists are finding multiple uses for the same drug. That's the best and worst aspect of science.

I was just reading the article thinking that scientists found another use for viagra, but it was only in hamsters. However, it was still interesting that they found out such a fact. Who would have thought of giving hamsters viagra to figure out if it were to cure jetlag? This made me wonder what was the original use of viagra and I heard it was for high blood pressure and such. I wondered if it even worked for its original purpose. I found out a lot of interesting facts about viagra on wikipedia at this link.

Crazy how many uses a certain drug can have outside of its intended and developed purpose. It seems like lately especially scientists are finding other uses for drugs. It is very interesting to see all the things they find out, some are very random and weird. It makes you wonder why they would even try or find out why some of the things do work. Like in the article, Viagra for jet lag? Would have never thought that would ever be possible or even considered. Just shows how weird science is and how things workout when you least expect them to. I wonder what will be discovered next to have multiple purposes.

First of all, this is creepy. The idea that scientist would just randomly think, "You know, I think we should test viagra on rats." Isn't that some sort of animal cruelty. I mean, you test viagra on the rats, they become extremely aroused and then they can't even do anything about it. How ridiculous is that? Not to mention, even if there is some sort of jet lag benefit to taking viagra, who in their right mind would willingly take viagra in order to recover more wuickly from jet lag. First of all, for men, it would be completely embarrassing. Scenario: I am sitting on a plane next to a 30 something year old man with the biggest heart on I have ever seen and his explanation to the flight attendant when I tell her he is creeping me out is, "I am just using it for jet lag." Ummm no, I don't think anybody will be using it any time soon. And what about woman? First of all, will it make us aroused or will it just help with jet lag. But agian, who in the heck would take viagra willingly unless they needed a little help in the bedroom. People. The things they will do.

Here is a site that answers the woman question.

Drugs are simply amazing. A drug like viagra is meant for one thing, but has another use that you would never think of. Reading this article was difficult at first because it was so scientific. Then you read the last paragraph. Viagra prevents jet lag. Viagra is still new, so I wonder what other uses it can have. Viagra and Botox are the miracle drugs in modern times. Its strange that scientists had to test on hamsters, because many people have been taking viagra. No one ever took viagra and went on a plane I guess.
Heres a website that talks about everything you ever wanted to know about viagra.

This article provides us with the perfect example of how science is at a continuous growth and will never cease to change. I kind of laughed at first in response to this article due to the fact that the direct link we make with viagra is the arousal aspect in males. Now, to think that it can be possibly used for other factors in the body, just goes to show how unpredictable science may really be.

If this theory gets approved by the FDA and is put on the market, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happens to do really well. Nowadays, travel is at an all time high in the corporate world, and taking a pill that would decrease the amount of jet lag will definately be a high commodity. My only concern would the side effects though. I think it would seem more appealing if (I don't even know if this is possible) researchers can isolate the arousal effects and just have it effect the internal clock.

Until then, I think this would be quite weird for men to take. Who knows how a certain dose will effect them or not. Yes, they may be taking it for the sole purpose of adjusting to jet lag, but the pill may indeed have a greater effect on the arousal aspect...and thats a thought that makes me very skeptical about putting this pill on the market.

Here is another article that talks about such new findings...

It's funny to think that Viagra can be used in more than just one way. It's also interesting how it helps with jetlag and can be a milestone for business. By cutting down jetlag time, business can flow much faster and easier with no interruptions of having a messed up sleep schedule. As we learned from class, science has brought us a long way and we're finding multiple uses for each type of drug. Eventually, there could be drugs that can do it all.
