The Skinny on Dairy Diets

Here's a nice article (pdf format) on the limits to the research on dairy products and weight loss. Thanks, Amira!

It's interesting how much sway over politics and business specific lobby groups have when it comes to advertising. Obviously living a moderate lifestyle in which one chooses a variety of foods and activities is best, but when companies start telling people what's good for them, I think it leads people to overdo it sometimes. I tend to doubt studies that make it seem one thing or another works in a miraculous way. Living life as moderately as possible with a varied diet is best, no matter what some scientist in a lab coat has to say about it. If people didn't eat half-pound cheeseburgers twice a day and drive gigantic SUVs everywhere, this obesity issue wouldn't even exist. Nonetheless, I believe eating a bit of dairy here and there can't be a bad thing. I myself enjoy yogurt and cheese from time to time, so here's a little reassuring study on the health benefits of MODERATE dairy consumption:

It's not fair for the people who want to lose weight and see the milk ad and not lose any weight at all. The ads also should not be based upon a study with only 40-50 people because its not accurate. This little research is not enough to prove that eating dairy will help people lose weight. It doesn't even tell the consumers that the study was based on overweight people instead of normal weight people, so its very misleading for many. More research should be tested on this claim about dairy.

this is a link shows that theres no difference in eating dairy or not to lose weight:

Amira 7670,

This was a very interesting article to read. I am a huge fan of cereal. I also saw it as a healthier meal than anything else (ie - Raisin Bran cereal with 1% fat milk). I would eat it in the morning, and many times at night hoping that it will help lose weight.

After spending a couple months in Egypt last summer I was able to lose a lot of weight; however, once I came back home I somehow gained it all back while maintaining pretty much the same diet. My mom had a theory that it was milk that made me gain the weight back, and I persistantly disagreed with her, using the milk weight loss ad campaign as my defense. Thus, I was shocked to hear during class, the other day and, to read in this article that milk does not aid in weight loss!

It is so disappointing how companies can create such false advertisements in order to boost their sales. Although this is a common trick, it was hard for me to believe that they would implement it in something that many of us consume in our daily lives. I am just upset becuase I took their messages seriously and did attempt to consume more milk in hopes for losing more weight.

Below is a link for another blog that discusses this whole weight loss propaganda. (Includes several interesting links on this issue)
